Creighton Dental CSDS
with  silver fluoride dissolved in water.

Creighton Dental is a newly established company that follows on from Creighton Pharmaceutical who successfully marketed a 40% water-based silver fluoride and a 10% stannous fluoride from 1978 to 2002.
The re-introduction of the combination, especially silver fluoride with its unique
water-based formulation, has been prompted by a number of developments.
Firstly, the need for a product with all the advantages of silver fluoride without the
presence of ammonia. (All silver diammine fluoride [SDF] products are ammonia based).
Secondly, the finding by Drs Craig, Powell and Price, all formerly from the University of Sydney, that the application of silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride can provide a reliable indicator of carious lesion status (reference below).
They found that the application of 40% silver fluoride to an active open carious lesion in a primary molar followed 1-3 minutes later by the application of 10% stannous fluoride turned the lesion black. If the lesion stayed black it was a reliable indicator of caries stasis; whereas if the colour was lost it was suggestive of lesion progression.
This provides a simple visual tool for lesion assessment and minimises the need for potentially harmful probing and also the taking of radiographs.
